Machina Prōductus

Video Art

“Machina Prōductus” (2023) explores how machines and aesthetic systems that we engage with on a daily basis are tied to strict notions traditionalistic values, religion, and Late-Stage-Capitalism. It seeks to expose, plainly, how these intersecting systems only ever view human life is product. This could be product in the sense of creating an ideal worker, follower, or in the religious-gendered sense, and effective provider/babymaker.

“Machina Prōductus” (2023) pushes the aforementioned ideas to an extreme by placing the viewer into a reality where the connections between these systems are explicit and followed. The Audio/Video component of this piece follows the process of the “Final Sanctification” of an initiate in this machine/product focused religion. The initiate is placed into a machine where everything that would make them unproductive in regard to emotion, feeling, personal boundaries, and empathy are lobotomized. The intended outcome of this ritual is complete submission; however, this machine is not 100 percent effective, and sometimes a strong-willed and rebellious can potentially survive the machine with their humanity intact.

The other portion of this piece is an exploration of how aesthetic systems in the west view humans as product to perfected as well. Included with this portrait are ten photo composites that show how Adobe’s Photoshop, the most popular and most widely used photo manipulation software, attempts “perfect” people. These ten composites started with a simple color-correction and then were only modified with the spot-heal tool, Photoshop’s solution to human “blemishes.” Some of the composites have been layered on top of each other to see how final results compare.
