Working in Analog Pt4

Inspiration:

There is not much new to share for inspiration this week. Most the time was spent finishing up the audio portion of my project. Since an important part of this on-going audio project was meant to find comfort, joy, and catharsis in the process of creating the project I spent some time refreshing myself on some sonic art history. This included looking at some of Pauline Oliveros and Brian Eno’s work:

· Pauline Oliveros: https://paulineoliveros.us/

o I of IV (music made with casette tapes): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kJD0dbE9Ow

As well as some contemporary work:

o Her AI assisted album: https://www.hollyherndon.com/proto

o Created by Laurie Anderson: https://laurieanderson.com/

o And Tenzin Choegyal: https://www.tenzinchoegyal.com/

Progress:

Plenty of progress has been made this week in regard to finishing up the audio portion of the project. First, I finished editing together the various synth tests I have been working on into four distinct acts. Next, I rewrote and recorded the voice lines for the project and began incorporating them in. Finally, I passed through the project several times to finalize a master.

It is so helpful to have a conceptual direction because progress was directed and quick.

The work at this point takes place in a fictional universe where consumerism, religion, human productivity have been merged in a non-discreet way. The audio is of a speaker introducing someone that is going to submit to a process where they are going to have their emotions removed to maximize productivity. I decided to use language that I was finding in the readings about Muscular, New Thought, Prosperity, Theology. The process fails at the end, however.

Reflection:

It has been helpful to remind myself of the other part of this project this week, that is understanding the immersive and cathartic quality of the process of making art. I very much feel that there is a little bit of me that has been put into those synth recordings as they allowed me to process emotions. I am happy with the progress I have made this week.

I am also glad I got experiment with speculative fiction. Critical fiction is something I have been wanting to incorporate into my work more. Looking back at my origins in filmmaking, story has always been an important way for me to process and present ideas.
