Inspiration:
For this week, after doing much experimentation I sought to really place my piece into a critical context that I had only been thinking about the weeks prior. So this led me to explore some art performances that have explored the ties between consumerism and religion:
First is Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverend_Billy_and_the_Church_of_Stop_Shopping
This artist created an entire performance cult dedicated to anti-consumerism. While this was a good start, I wanted to see how religion informs consumerism. So next I looked at the prosperity gospel in that is popular in the Southwest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_theology
This theological practice ties material success directly with performance and dedication related to church activities. This also led to look at similar off shoots of Christianity including New Thought Christianity and Muscular Christianity which ties Christian concepts with toxic masculinity and positive thinking:
Progress:
I only have a couple audio tests this week to show. I was testing out the Moog Mother 32 but for some reason that I have not been able to determine it would crash my audio interface every couple of minutes, so I could not really get that good of sound out of it.
After several hours of frustration with the Mother 32 I went back to the Grandmother to record perhaps the last major sample I needed. From here I need to start splicing the whole project together and begin mastering. I will also need to rewrite the lyrics I plan to include to match the projects intent better.
Reflection:
This week has been both disappointing and refreshing. I am glad to have a solid conceptual direction to place the project into, but I wish I could have figured out the issues that I was having with the Audio interface. I am pretty comfortable at this point with the Grandmother 32 and want to push to use a more complex interface. Looking at how much time I have left for this project, the experimentation needs to come to an end and I need to wrap everything up.
