Research
Research this past week involved a couple things. First, I took a deeper dive into understanding the context that my game is in. Rafael Fajardo gave a couple leads to investigate. This would be micro-games. Games like USC’s Hush (2007) or Darfur is Dying (2007). Both of these games critically analyze different parts of the Rwandan Genocide in short, five-minute sessions. Author, Ian Bogost, from game developer calls these micro-games “Vignettes” after the written genre that shares the same name (2008).
Further exploring this idea, I looked the game series Warioware which is a game made up of several micro games: https://www.mariowiki.com/WarioWare_(series)
Progress
I spent 4-6 hours this week trying to get a scene transition to work in between the two characters from last week. No matter what I did I could not get collision detected between the player and the enemy that chases him.
I tried setting up a timer instead that would show text telling the player to press a button to transition the scene. I could get the button working and show the text, but I could not get the timer to work. I applied it to multiple elements in the scene to get it to count down, but nothing would work.
So, I decided to shift directions — I started to build an interactive installation piece with the one part of the game I have working. The other two scenes will be incorporated into the background of the piece.
Reflection
It was really frustrating realizing I was reaching a point of failure with this project. I think one thing I have learned is that I think I need a more formal style of learning for these types of projects. Game engines are too complex to learn quickly, and no amount coding knowledge or documentation can get me to learn one fast.
Conceptually, since I have had time to let the ideas present in the project have more time to cook, I understand more fully how the direction I want to go with future pieces. I want to explore how gender related trauma intersects with extremism by reflecting on my own experiences. Then thinking even further I need to figure out how to connect my work with a platform based on empathy.
